Two counties, one city
Millbrook lies in both Elmore and Autauga counties, occupying the southwest corner of Elmore County about ten miles north of Montgomery. Its population was 16,564 at the 2020 census, up from 14,640 in 2010, making it the largest city in Elmore County, and it covers roughly 14.5 square miles at about 253 feet of elevation.
The two-county situation is not a technicality. It determines which county handles permitting and inspection for a given parcel, and homeowners regularly assume the whole city sits in Elmore. Check your parcel before a contractor tells you which office to call.
How it grew, and why that matters underfoot
In 1878 the Louisville and Nashville railroad completed a line into Elmore County with a spur to Prattville that ran through Millbrook, and the settlement developed as a place for people working in Montgomery to live outside it. The areas of Millbrook, Coosada and Robinson Springs, known locally as the Tri-Communities, grew between the world wars, and the construction of Interstate 65 in the mid-1970s accelerated that enough that Millbrook incorporated in 1977.
The practical consequence is a housing stock stacked heavily toward the 1970s onward, on lots that were subdivided out of rolling rural land over a compressed period. Cut-and-fill pads are common, and so are the settlement patterns that follow them.
North of the river is a different geology
Elmore County sits north of where the Coosa and Tallapoosa join to form the Alabama River. Geologically this places Millbrook near the northern edge of the Coastal Plain in the Fall Line Hills, a district the Encyclopedia of Alabama describes as underlain by sands and gravels, clays and beds of fossil oyster shells, with rounded hills cut by valleys carrying two hundred to two hundred fifty feet of local relief.
That is a meaningfully different situation from the Black Belt south and west of Montgomery. Expansive smectite clay is much less likely to be the villain here. Slope, runoff and erosion usually are, and the fix is usually drainage work rather than underpinning. What a curtain drain actually needs to work
Because so many problems here start with water arriving from uphill, the curtain drain is the workhorse repair in Millbrook, and it is also the one most often installed badly. Four things determine whether it works. It needs continuous fall to a discharge point that actually daylights, not a low spot that backs up. It needs washed, uniformly graded stone rather than crusher run, which silts in. It needs filter fabric wrapped around the stone envelope, not wrapped directly on the pipe, so the fabric filters at the soil boundary where it can. And it needs to be deep enough to intercept the flow rather than skimming above it. Ask a contractor to specify all four in writing. A trench dug to an unspecified depth with pipe and dirt backfilled over it is a common and expensive disappointment.
