The buckle of the belt
Hayneville is a town of 830 people at the 2020 census, covering under two square miles at roughly 230 feet of elevation, and it is the seat of Lowndes County. Lowndes County was formed on January 20, 1830, from parts of Montgomery, Dallas and Butler counties. Through the 1820s the settlement was known as Big Swamp; it was renamed in 1831, after being chosen as county seat, in honor of Robert Y. Hayne. The Lowndes County Courthouse, built in 1856 in Greek Revival style, has served continuously since and is one of only four antebellum courthouses still in use in Alabama.
That courthouse is a useful reminder of what the local building stock is like: a lot of very old structures on very difficult soil, still standing because they were built with generous footings and because somebody has kept water away from them.

The chalk formed from Late Cretaceous marine deposits and weathers into heavy calcareous clays, many of them classified by the USDA as Vertisols. The series names recur across the region: Sumter, Houston, Oktibbeha, Vaiden, Demopolis, Binnsville, Okolona. Houston and Okolona soils are described as having very high shrink-swell potential.
They are rich in expanding smectite clay. When wet they swell. When dry they shrink and open deep cracks, sometimes producing the hummock-and-swale surface pattern soil scientists call gilgai. How houses respond to it
Expect seasonal movement rather than one-time settlement. Doors that stick in August and swing freely in February, cracks that widen and narrow through the year, and slabs that heave in the middle rather than dropping at the edge are all consistent with this soil. That last one catches people out, because the instinctive assumption is always that a foundation is going down. In expansive clay it frequently goes up, and a repair aimed at settlement will make a heave problem worse.

Rural access and travel
Lowndes County is thinly populated and largely rural, and not every contractor in the Montgomery market runs out here regularly. Say where the property is when you first describe the problem so nobody wastes time. Ask any contractor working in this county how deep they intend to go and why, because in this soil depth is the whole argument, and a shallow pier in Vertisol clay is a receipt rather than a repair.
Heave or settlement? Tell them apart first
In Vertisol clay this is the diagnostic question, because the two problems look similar from inside the house and call for opposite responses. Underpinning a slab that is heaving does not help and can make matters worse.
An elevation survey across the floor plane is what separates them. Settlement typically produces a low perimeter or a low corner, with the interior of the slab relatively high by comparison. Heave typically produces a high interior, often near the center or along a wet line such as a plumbing run, with the perimeter comparatively low. Timing helps too: settlement usually worsens after prolonged dry weather as clay shrinks away from footings, while heave worsens after prolonged wet weather or where a leak has introduced water under the slab. If cracks close up in winter and open in late summer, moisture cycling is driving it. Insist on the survey and on a stated explanation of which mechanism the contractor believes is at work, before you agree to anything.
