Where structural repair is genuinely needed, it usually follows the moisture rather than leading it: sill plates and band joists that have softened, piers that have settled into saturated soil, and floor joists that have sagged over long spans. Fixing those without fixing the water buys you a repeat of the same job.

Before drainage work is designed

Find out where the water can legally and practically go. A drain that has nowhere to daylight is a buried pipe that fills up and stays full. On flat, low ground the discharge point is the hardest part of the design and the part most often glossed over in a quote. Ask exactly where the water will exit, and go look at that spot.

Sump systems on low ground

Where the water table is high enough that drainage alone cannot carry water away by gravity, a sump becomes part of the answer, and there are a few things worth insisting on before one goes in.

The pit needs to be deep enough and large enough that the pump is not short-cycling, because a pump switching on and off every ninety seconds fails early. The discharge line has to carry water genuinely away from the house and daylight somewhere it will not simply run back, which on flat ground is the hardest part of the design. A check valve keeps the column of water in the discharge line from draining back into the pit each cycle.
